It was learned from the Municipal Transportation Bureau that the feasibility study report of Zhanggao River crossing project was approved by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission. Zhanggao River Crossing Channel is one of the highway river crossing channels in the Yangtze River Trunk Waterway Layout Plan (2020-2035) issued by the National Development and Reform Commission. It is also one of the seven river crossing channels in Jiangsu province's implementation plan of the Yangtze River Delta Regional Integration Development Plan, which improves the layout of river crossing channel construction and accelerates the construction recently.

The project is located 28 kilometers downstream of Jiangyin Bridge and 16 kilometers upstream of Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Highway and Railway Bridge, starting from the Changyang interchange of Shugang Expressway in Zhangjiagang and ending at the Shizhuang interchange of Shanghai-Shaanxi Expressway in the west of Shizhuang Town in Rugao, with a total length of 29.9 kilometers.

The construction of this project is of great significance to the implementation of the national strategy of the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta, the early realization of cross-river integration and the development of embracing the Yangtze River in Jiangsu province, and the construction of a high-level Yangtze River city cluster. At present, the construction unit of the project has entered the site, and the preliminary design is accelerated to lay a solid foundation for the formal construction of the project.
